One aspect of addictions being so difficult to treat is the the person who is addicted does not or will not admit to the addiction. Some people just do not believe it is a problem. The very sad part of addictions is that the addicted person can lose everything they ever had--family, job or business, hoem, children, relationship, physical health, emotional health (this is a given) and one can still come up with a reason. Several years ago I met a man who had been a photographer; his work was impeccable, and he had won many awards for capturing the human emotion that he knew was there. Looking at his portfolio brought the feeling of being there--his work incredible!! I saw him at a very low point--in a hospital Emergecy Department, broke, poor health intoxicated, having lost his business, his family, his business partner, relationships, yet he said "I can give you at least one excuse for drinking no matter how many loses that are pointed out to me. Although, this man had lost so very much, he was not going to let his best buddy, alcohol "the hard stuff--when I have the money, otherwise anything will do," including "rubbing alcohol." This man had not hit bottom. He knew it and so did I. There was no way to help him at that moment in time. That was 4 years ago. I haven't seen nor heard from him. What I learned from this man was a reality that cut through the red tape of referring and treating individuals with addictions to alcohol, gambling, sex, food, drugs, the internet, etc. What are others experiences in working with, living with, having been addicted in one form or another?
