Divorce...hmmm - I guess the best advice I received was 'get out & mix' from a hypnotherapist doc. It wasn't that easy as many friends were mutual friends & couples of course. But I tried it & it 'got me out of myself'. Likely most people feel a sense of failure & perhaps surprise. I thought I'd married for life & the separation (initiated by me) hadn't been part of my mindset. So shock was part of it. I would say get some input from a professional as well as friends - a coach, counselor, spiritual advisor. I didn't & wish I had (this was a long time ago & I was young). I agree with Ellen. It takes a village! Everyone needs that friend that takes you out of yourself and says, "Put your party dress on...we're going out!" Even when you don't feel like facing the world, it is the best thing for you. I reached out to friends and professionals of all kinds. My attorney and my accountant through the divorce were invaluable as I began to "find myself" and the strength I had within. Once divorced, my estate planning attorney and financial planner were key to my future. And ironically enough, they were all divorced at one time or another and all became lifelong friends. The great thing about divorce is that you surely aren't the only one going through it! Ask for help. People are willing to help you through it as someone did for them, a Pay it Forward sort of thing.
