This is a major problem for many people facing uncertain economic, social and political times. It competes with anxiety for the number one mental health concern in the U.S. When sonsidering treatment for depression it becomes a battle between which came first, the chicken (biochemical) or the egg (situational). A good place to start is to identify if there are family patterns or history of depression. My preference is offer psychotherapy or counseling with the possibility of using anti-depressants as an adjunct therapy as needed, unless it is deemed to be more biochemical. From my professional training as a counselor and social worker, I am configured to think that if medications are prescribed, it is best practice to offer counseling support. The best psychiatrists I have worked with, or for, have taken this approach. John

I agree with John. I am still getting situated with getting a therepist, and I am too afraid to take medications without someone to hold my hand.
